Hi All,

I'm just starting to look at Merlin and have compiled it on a test 
Nagios node I've got. When it fire up the daemon it's not listening on 
any TCP port. I'm sure I'm missing something simple but I cant' think 
what it can be. This is with a default configuration.

Any ideas?

Hi,
I had the same problem, it seems it was disabled in version 0.6.8, but has
since been reopened in version 0.7 currently on git. I have that version
running with 2 NOC's now working together. Configuration configs must still
be manually copied, but checks are working nicely together via merlin.

Thanks for that, Thomas, glad it wasn't me being dumb!. Wonder why it
was disabled?

I'll take a look at the current git version. Would you describe it as
being stable enough for production use?

I recently installed Nagios 3.2.1 and Ninja 1.0.3 on Fedora 13 and found that I cannot login to Ninja from other systems other than the localhost. I am able login to Nagios from other systems using the same username and password however this does not work from other systems accessing Ninja.

Hi
I have only had it running a couple of days in a test enviroment, and so
far I haven't run into any bugs for the parts I have testet.
but it is still beta code. It is production ready for a single nagios
server as it is indeed running as the backend for ninja. but I would say it
is still beta in regards to redundency setups, as it is still lacking
config syncs.
I don't plan on using it for our production site until the config syncs are
in place. But I will be testing what I can in our test enviroment until
then.
As for why it was disabled, I remember reading a post some while ago were
Andreas disabled it in 0.6.7 I think is was, due to some bug. I am guessing
that is now fixed.

Hi Shazia,

This sounds pretty weird and the only thing I can come to think about is that you shouold check the system time on your nagios machine since it might be a session issue.
Do you get an error if you try to access the system with a login/passwd that you know doesn't exist?
If not - it's definetely a session issue.

I'm using the check_esx3 from op5 to monitor some esx servers.

I'm trying to get the script to check storage space.

If i'm making it out clearly, the script reports FREE space or FREE %.

Here's how I'm calling it:

./check_esx3 -D virtualcenterserver -H vmhost -u user -p password -l vmfs -s
'datastore' -w 20% -c 10%

what I expect is that this will report a WARNing when there is 20% free
space remaining and CRITical when there is only 10% warning.  but that's not
what I get.

here's the output of the command above:

ESX CRITICAL - datastore=134192.00 MB (32.10%) |
VMMgmt01:storage1=32.10%;20;10

I've tried reversing the warning/critical threshold as such:

./check_esx3 -D virtualcenterserver -H vmhost -u user -p password -l vmfs -s
'datastore' -w 80% -c 90%

and still no joy.  i get:

weirdness.

These are still Nagios thresholds, not plain percentage values.

http://nagiosplug.sourceforge.net/developer-guidelines.html#THRESHOLDFORMAT

You probably want "20%:" instead of your current "20%" if you want a 
CRITICAL status when the free space is below 20%.

Nice; but still I have question how to make Geomap working so that you
can add new locations / new connections etc .. view is working but I
cannot add anything on the map via interface at the moment. Feature or a
bug?

I was already looking for work workaround - editing XMLs by hand, but
there are no examples around how XMLs should look like?

Any suggestions?

Hi Andraz,

I got caught up on how i expected to add a point, and maybe that's
what you've run into. To add a new point, you must search for it, and
then click add. You can't add a new point just by entering a
longitude/latitude or something like that, it has to be done though
the search. When you have 2+ points, you can connect them.

Try changing the $target_link variable in controllers/pnp.php to
$target_link = 'graph';

Hi,
I implement checks for Targets and Devices. In attachment testing script. You can run it using either :
1) ./check_disks -H {host} -u {user name} -p {password}
2) ./check_disks -H {host} -f {file with credentials}

The only one thing. I have doubts where to put this info. Into -l config or -l hardware or something else. Maybe you know some good option for this check ?

If you are upgrading from git - make sure you get all files.
That method was added july 9 so it should work.

Hi All

I am using LDAP authentication for Nagios, using the authnz_ldap_module in apache. I just need ldap creditentials to log in to Nagios. 

How can I configure Ninja to use LDAP authenticaiton, and bypass its default authentication?

My nagios output is iso8859-15, but ninja displays in utf-8, is there a
way to get ??? to work in ninja ? or can i somehow change the output of

Hopefully this is a stupid question/problem -- and I apologize in
advance if it is...

I just installed Ninja on top of a relatively blank Nagios install on
an Ubuntu 10 system. I followed the Ubuntu quickstart guide and I
believe everything should be set up properly. I had changed the
default merlin password when I installed it to something other than
the default "merlin" password which lead me to changing quite a few
references to that in the Ninja configs as well. Eventually I believe
I found all the places that it needed to be changed (thanks to a few
posts in the mailing list archives) and I now get the "Ninja Login"
screen instead of a mysql_connect error as before when i hit the web
URL of my installation.
I figured all was good, however, I can not login to the system. Every
time I enter my username and password that is stored in the
'merlin.users' table, it comes right back to the login screen again. I
tried updating the password via the mysql command line (using the
encrypt() function -- hopefully thats correct?) but, I still get the
same results of a repeating login page. There are no errors defining
an incorrect password or anything on the UI page, so I'm not sure if
thats what is actually failing or not. I enabled mysql logging to see
what was being passed and have pasted that output below. I'm not quite
sure where I'm going wrong here but if anyone has any input on what I
can check, it would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hi Travis,

Have you checked the time on your server running Ninja? I've seen this
behaviour before when there's been a time skew on the server. The fact
that you don't get any error messages after trying to log on points in
the same direction: the time skew invalidates the session (in some
browsers).

Thank you for the quick follow-up. The server time appears to be in
sync, however, I did notice that the lack of an error message appears
to be due to my browser. In Firefox, I do get an error of "Login
failed - please try again" below the Ninja logo after attempting a
login. In Chrome or IE there is no error.

This of course seems to just be a login failure at this point. I'm
assuming the proper command for manually setting a user password in
the Merlin DB via the MySQL CLI is:

update users set password_algo="crypt", password=encrypt("password")
where id="x"

or am I using the wrong encryption/hash?

Set the login/password in htaccess.user the way you normally would in Nagios and it will be imported during login.
Setting a password manually would be overwritten anyway.

Are you connecting to your server through ip or dns name?

I would suggest to get the login to work with Firefox first and when this works the IE/Chrome issues can probably be solved more easily.

I just wanted to let you all know that I've just recently implemented
command propagation and performance data handling in merlin. Config
sync still remains before Merlin is more or less feature-complete for
the next major op5 release, which is due to be beta-released around
wednesday next week (actually this friday, but we'll probably go into
overtime slightly).

I'd be delighted if people would try it out and let me know how it
goes. I haven't tested the new features very much, but I'm fairly
certain I haven't broken anything.

As per usual the very latest version is only available from the git
repository, located at

   git://git.op5.org/nagios/merlin.git

Or if you'd rather download the snapshot tarball from the gui-web,
you can do so at http://git.op5.org/git/?p=nagios/merlin.git;a=summary
although you'll probably have to wait up to 30 minutes for the tag
to show up in that repository.

Bugreports and feature-complaints are, as always, most welcome.

Make sure not to mix daemons and modules from 0.7 and earlier with
ones from 0.8 and later, as host and service check result handling
has been revamped slightly and 0.7 packets to a 0.8 daemon being
forwarded to a 0.7 module again will almost certainly crash the
receiving Nagios daemon, so upgrade module and daemon at the same
time, please.

Right now I'm connecting to the system via IP address as it was
intended to be more of a test setup.

I figured it only imported the users during install, but it sounds
like it checks the htpasswd.users file each time a user logs in, and
stores the user password or user account if they don't exist? I
misunderstood the login procedure but I went poking around and found
the password importer PHP file and sure enough, the path was wrong. I
changed that then started getting some more valuable errors. After a
few more changes to a few more files, I got it up and going.

I have found them by plain searching in textfile after textfile, but it would
be neat with a document that describes where they are and even better would be
if it could explain what they are for more concrete than the comments in the

No there's not, and it wouldn't be much point since apache with
embedded php runs ninja a lot faster than nginx with fastcgi.

Feel free to write up a tutorial if you get it working though.

Users can normally only see the hosts they are set as contacts for. The
exception is superusers, which are listed as "authorized_for_all_hosts" in
the cgi.cfg file, which gets imported into the ninja database where it's
used to determine who can see what.

Hi,
yeah I am aware of the per host or per service. But I was hoping that
instead of adding a contact to some 300 hosts, that I could instead add it
to 1 hostgroup and vupti, that user could see all hosts in that hostgroup.
Is this posible?

Hi,

I get 404 errors whenever I have enabled pnp4nagios or nagvis in the
application/config/config.php section with the right paths to them, I can
confirm that standalone they work like they should.

Is there any specific max version you have to use for it to integrate with
Ninja neatly or am I missing some config option somewhere?

I am running Ninja 1.0.3 with Merlin from Git (0.8.0 something I think), nagios
3.2.2, pnp4nagios 0.6.5 and nagvis 1.4.6 (using merlin as backend)

Everything else is working like it should and I really love the idea and the
Gui :)

Can't call method "value" on an undefined value at
/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_esx3.pl line 1048

What should I do to solve this issue? My experience in Perl coding is
not very well. :(

check_esx3 is being overhauled for our next release, although I think
this particular bug is already solved. Check out our git repositories
and you should find a newer version that works nicely.

This is worrying. merlind shouldn't use any code that dlopen()'s
anything. I suggest you follow Anders Haal's advice regarding yum
installs and also download the latest and greates merlin version
from http://git.op5.org

In that case I think it should work just fine, but obviously it doesn't.
File this as a bug at bugs.op5.com and someone will take care of it when
time permits.

Please include exact command-line and error messages and as much info
as possible about the system you're trying to monitor. ESX version and
suchlike is very valuable when tracking down bugs.

I'm using check_esx as a nagios plugin to monitor my Vmware servers ESXI
3.5. I'm very happy with all the features of this plugin, but my
probleme is that it needs a lot of ressources to execute, especialy CPU
ressources.

I use check_esx to do 6 checks for every ESXI server, and every check
take at leat 60% of the CPU, so imagine when more than checks are
exectued at the same time.

Is there a solution to my problem ?

The characteristics of my CPU are the following:

model name	: Intel(R) Pentium(R) III CPU family      1400MHz
stepping	: 1
cpu MHz		: 1396.496
cache size	: 512 KB

First of all, that CPU is almost ten years old. Of course you're not 
going to get any kind of modern CPU equivalent performance out of it.

Having said that, we've made some big performance enhancements to 
check_esx. Are you running the latest version from Git?

I've been looking at Merlin as an option for converting a standalone Nagios
install into a redundant one with Nagios servers in two different DCs. But
I've got a couple of questions I can't seem to find answers to:

* When one installs Merlin, does Nagios cease to use it's native backend for
storing check results? If I were to convert an existing Nagios server to use
Merlin, what parts of Nagios (if any) would stop working? I saw something
about reporting not working correctly with Merlin.

* Merlin uses a DB as it's backend. Assuming redundant nagios instances and
merlind's, does each merlin use a separate DB server or is the DB server a
SPOF?

* In a load-balanced/redundant config, if one nagios server dies, does
Merlin automatically transfer responsibility for all of those checks to the
remaining nagios server?

* What is the minimum version of Nagios required for Merlin?

We are running merlin (0.6.7-beta) with nagios 3.2. But we see some error
messages from the merlin daemon logs file, which are more like:
 Nulling OOB ptr 0.  type: 601; offset: 0x100000003; len: 307; overshot with
4294966992 bytes

We are not quite sure what caused that and if it is harmful for merlin. Can
you give us some hints on this?

hey gang,

I'm still having trouble with check_esx3 and how it reports warning and
critical.

i'm trying to alert when free space is warning: 20% and critical 10%.

my commandline is:

root at osystem:/opt/plugins# /opt/plugins/check_esx3 -D vchost1 -H vmhost1 -u
user -p password -l vmfs -s "VMHost:storage1" -w 20%: -c 10%:


The output of the command is:

ESX WARNING - VMWeb03:storage1=84899.00 MB (12.18%) |
VMWeb03:storage1=12.18%;20:;10:

i added a line at around 313:

print "critical: $critical and warning: $warning\n";

this prints:
critical: 10: and warning: 20:

so my guess is that this isn't reporting on %...

any one able to help?

hey gang,

I'm still having trouble with check_esx3 and how it reports warning and critical.

i'm trying to alert when free space is warning: 20% and critical 10%.

my commandline is:

root at osystem:/opt/plugins# /opt/plugins/check_esx3 -D vchost1 -H vmhost1 -u user -p password -l vmfs -s "VMHost:storage1" -w 20%: -c 10%:


The output of the command is:

ESX WARNING - VMWeb03:storage1=84899.00 MB (12.18%) | VMWeb03:storage1=12.18%;20:;10:

i added a line at around 313:

print "critical: $critical and warning: $warning\n";

this prints:
critical: 10: and warning: 20:

so my guess is that this isn't reporting on %...

any one able to help?

It is still a very old CPU, and one we don't optimize for in the scripts.

Nagios still uses its native backend for storing checkresults.

Reportdata is, as of merlin-0.7.x, stored in the table 'report_data' within
the merlin database. Repairing a broken report_data table is still a bit of
a manual chore. The import program shipped with merlin-0.7.1-something can
import logfiles into the database but you'll have to find the breakpoints
in timestamps etc yourself.

merlin-0.8.x supports forwarding command events and handling performance
data on all nodes in the tier tree. This is the latest version available
now.

merlin-0.9.x will (in a way) support configuration synchronization. This
will be implemented using scripts that the merlin daemon calls when the
module connects to it after a Nagios restart. This is not available yet.

merlin-1.0 will be the first fine-tuned version after we've gotten a lot
of feedback from our customers and our sales team about how people wish
to use the distributed and loadbalancing features of Merlin.

Each merlin uses a separate db server. Someone wrote a patch to let Merlin
share a database between a lot of instances, but the code was so out of

Yes.

3.2.x is the only one we've tried with recent versions of Merlin. Merlin
utilizes the NEBERROR_CALLBACKOVERRIDE return code to block host and
service checks that should be run by a different server, so it should work
with any Nagios-version that has and understands that return code. I have
no idea which version that was introduced in though, so you'll have to
look that up for yourself.

First of all I'd recommend that you upgrade to the latest merlin version.
The diffstat between 0.6.8 and the current merlin version (0.8.0-beta1-11)
ends with the following line:
 57 files changed, 9818 insertions(+), 1752 deletions(-)

Bugreports against pre-0.8 versions will simply be ignored.

If you're running different versions of Merlin in your network, you're
pretty much asking to be bitten by something like this as well, as merlin
is in very rapid development right now.

I've seen this happen when one system is a 32-bit one and the other one runs
64-bit code, but that's the only occasion. It's one of the shortcomings of
merlin that it doesn't work across wordsize-boundaries. It will be fixed in
the future, but I'm not sure when. The rationale behind this is that it makes
the protocol ridiculously efficient, and if you need redundancy,
loadbalancing or distributed monitoring, you're a large enough organization
to be able to afford some new hardware, or a new vmware server.

Please provide some examples of the commands you are using.

It seems as if the version string has not been updated so the version
number don't help us much. Please try the latest from git anyway, I
think the last changes was made a week ago or so.

check_disk from nagios-plugins can handle it.
Just call check_disk with other parameters in your nrpe.conf.

For example, if you now have
command[root_disk]=/opt/plugins/check_disk -w 20% -c 10% -p / -m

change it to
command[root_disk]=/opt/plugins/check_disk -w 2000 -c 1000 -u MB  -p / -m

Replace MB with kB, GB or TB if you want to measure in other units then megabytes.

My personal experience... I find that I can never make git work at my site due to firewall issues.  I find that the message that git gives me is a little misleading and originally made me think it was the remote server rather than the firewall.  I eventually gave up and just did the web download.

Since git v1.7 you can even push via http transport (with proxy). Which
helps a lot with paranoid firewall setups.

Is there anyone out there using op5 with DNX?  I've built it up in a lab and it all works - including merlin - just wondering if others have any experience with this set up.

I like the merlind approach for fault tolerance, but I prefer the DNX approach to scalability.

Wondering what others think.

Also wondering what the op5 team thinks of having DNX installed from a support perspective.

Joel,

I'm glad to hear you have this working! Our original design goal was to 
have 2 Merllin NOCs serviced by N DNX worker nodes each. I was going to 
split these NOCs between two separate DC's. We were also planning to 
route the ethernet traffic for the DNX workers though the NOC (NAT) and 
use tftp booting along with NFS root for the DNX workers for rapid 
expansion and deployment. This would also simplify firewall exceptions 
on all of our monitored hosts, and avoid the need to modify them for 
every new DNX worker as we grow. I was looking into this heavily back in 
February - May, but merlin was not really ready for 
load-balancing/redundancy back then. I was told to check back in the 
fall, and sure enough it sounds like the latest merlin beta will fit the 
bill for our desired infrastructure.

I'm swamped with other projects right now, but I'm hoping to tackle our 
Nagios infrastructure again soon. Can you tell me a little bit more 
about how many machines you're running and how many service checks / 
hosts you have configured?

Considering the amount of crashreports we've gotten the past 4 weeks (which
is none), I'd say people consider it fairly stable.

It's also been running in our lab-environment for the past 3 months without
any serious misbehaviour.

The capabilities of DNX may be built into the merlin daemon at a future
date, or the merlin system may be given capabilities to talk to dnx
daemons. That's still uncertain though.

We don't think about it. It might work and it might not, but officially
we don't support it and we won't even start testing it until a few
customers or quite a lot of opensource users explicitly request DNX
support. Our estimates on when that will happen includes "never" as a
likely option.

That being said, I'd be all for adapting Merlin so that it works without
problems alongside DNX, so long as it doesn't require anything major or
super-complex inside Merlin or Nagios to get that working, and I really
can't promise to maintain such modifications myself unless op5 decides
it's worth paid time to do so. If anyone else is up for it though, I'd
be extatic.

I was just thinking if this is possible...

we currently have a central monitor that waits for passive checks from 7 different nagios pollers on remote sites/network, the checks get submitted through a combination of NSCA and perl fifo dumps.

I would like to get rid of NSCA/fifo and use merlin/ninja instead, but i'm not sure if its supported?

It seems that every merlind process would have to talk/write to a centralized mysql database that the NOC(ninja) instance can view/modify, this way you can issue nagios command (e.g. force check a service) on any of the remote pollers running merlin.

However, I was reading a thread that said this was not supported, and someone created a patch but it was not accepted for various reason.

if that is indeed the case, is there anyway to accomplish this in the current versions ?

The submitted patch was meant to let multiple merlin instances communicate
with a single database, but that creates unnecessary network overhead.
Instead, the master server receives checkresults from the slave systems
and then inserts all status updates in its own database. This way, only
one system actually needs database access.

There is. Just configure your merlin nodes so that they send their
checkresults to the master server and have the master server write all

Do note that the latest merlin version is still considered beta code

So, from what i understand now is this...

1. Every merlind instance has its own mysql instance that is write information too(this is a requirement, it can be a remote database server, but each merlind must have its own schema)
.
2. All the merlind instances also send every check result/status/performance information to the master server (NOC), which also write all of the those results to its own database which ninja connects into.  

I'm a little unsure about the following...

Currently I have a central monitor instance of nagios (nagios/httpd) that waits/accepts passive results from all our pollers -- I have zero control over the pollers from the central monitor.  Meaning, that if I wanted to force a check for a certain service -- I must have httpd running on the poller itself and login to that particular poller which runs the specific service check and issue the desired command (ie. force immediate service check, instead of waiting for normal cycles)

Under the NOC/Merlird poller setup , would I be able to issue all (or some subset ) of the commands from the NOC console?  Or would I still have to be required to login to individual pollers(merlind) instances to run certain command (such as the "force immediate check", or disable/enable flap detection...etc)

It's not a requirement. If you don't configure the database section
in the daemon part of the configuration file no database will be used.
Otherwise, it's correct.

Yes, that's correct. Note that all global commands are being forwarded
though, so there's currently no way to disable checks for just the
master server, for example.

So what happens if I issue "schedule an immediate check for this 
service" on a NOC for a service that a poller is responsible for? Will 
the NOC execute it or will it forward the command to the poller?

What do you mean?

If nodeA considers nodeB to be nodeA's master, then nodeB really
shouldn't consider nodeA to be nodeB's master.

I have no idea what would happen if you configure it like this,
since it's patently absurd to let two nodes each think they're
the other ones master. Possibly, the universe will explode.

In theory, they should both run all their checks and send all
events to each other, much like peers do but without loadbalancing.
So if there is configuration overlap (which there has to be or this
won't make sense at all), you'll get a race condition where both
servers try to overwrite each others check results.

If you configure them to be pollers to each other though, then you
should be able to use them as peers with loadbalancing split up
between them manually (via hostgroups) and the takeover facility
should work just fine.

No it's not. It might be unavailable due to some firewall configuration
issues though, as our proprietary firewalls crashed last night and forced
an early switch to the linux-based solution we'll be using instead. I'll
contact our sysadmin and see if he knows anything about it.

What do you mean?

If nodeA considers nodeB to be nodeA's master, then nodeB really
shouldn't consider nodeA to be nodeB's master.

I have no idea what would happen if you configure it like this,
since it's patently absurd to let two nodes each think they're
the other ones master. Possibly, the universe will explode.

In theory, they should both run all their checks and send all
events to each other, much like peers do but without loadbalancing.
So if there is configuration overlap (which there has to be or this
won't make sense at all), you'll get a race condition where both
servers try to overwrite each others check results.

If you configure them to be pollers to each other though, then you
should be able to use them as peers with loadbalancing split up
between them manually (via hostgroups) and the takeover facility
should work just fine.

I'm in the process of testing ninja with reporting module. However, I
run into a problem when I press the "trends", I can not move services
from one field to another. Which means I can not choose which services I
want to make report on. Is it a known bug in the system or can I have
set something up wrong. Ndbneb and merlin are loaded at startup of
nagios.

Do you get any errors anywhere?
Tried doubleclicking and using the arrows?
What browser do you use?

If there are any errors available anywhere we would appreciate the ouput.
Javascript error reporting from Internet Explorer is usually less helpful than what both Firefox and Chrome produces so testing in another browser might help us hunting down the issue-

What version of Ninja are you using?

Hey again.

I tried running ninja from both firefox and ie on several machines. Im getting no errors.
Ive just checked the op5 sandbox and I have the same error there.
Tried doubleclikking as well as the arrows.
On my local machine I use ninja version 1.0.3.

Hi Michael

Sorry for the extremely late answer to this question. this email was
one of the things I planned to write the day I had some extra time on
my hands, turns out that day never comes... ;-)

We (op5) are actually involved in a project together with a customer
right now where we will develop a better way of handling traps. This
will, however, not be an opensource project but functionality offered
as an addon to op5 customers only. At least as a start.

We base this on a recent version of snmptrapd (from the net-snmp
package) which insert traps into database. We then use a lua based
rule engine to process the traps. Rules can, for example, change the
state of a service. In addition to this we will create a kind of
event/alarm view that can list traps in a simular way we list services
in Ninja. If all or only a subset of the traps end up in this event
view can be handled by the rule engine. The idea being that you might
not want to associate all traps to a service, instead the traps will
be listed and you will have the option to delete and ackowledge which
turn this view into a kind of 'unhandled problems' view for traps.

We are about half way through the development of the first version and
I hope it to be available for op5 customers late this year. Since this
right now is a one customer only implementation we are a bit short on
documentation. This will improve in a month or so.

When developing this we have also come across SEC,
http://simple-evcorr.sourceforge.net/ which together with snmptt
perhaps could be used to handle traps in Nagios. We did not really
investigate SEC in that much detail and I don't know how active the
project is but it might be an option if you want to develop something
on your own.

In that case, I offer a solution I use that likely isn't as polished with the
knobs to twist on a shiny gui, but it works flawlessly:

On my RHEL 5 based systems, I configure snmptrapd to catch all traps and
direct them to a handler.

This script then uses cases to match for conditions and submit that to
Nagios using a named pipe.

The script I use is a very modified, generic version of the one here:

I have been hacking at it for a while simplifying and adding cases etc
but not being a Perl programmer it's probably rather ugly.

I'm playing around with command propagation in peer2peer setup. It works,
but if I'm adding a comment or acknowledge a comment, I get one entry on
the iniating instance and two identical entries on the second instance. For
example:

test:  comment id 1
test2: comment id 1+2 (with the same content)

On instance test:
peer test2 {
    address = 127.0.0.1;
    port = 15552; # optional, since 15551 is the default
}

On instance test2:
peer test {
    address = 127.0.0.1;
    port = 15551; # optional, since 15551 is the default
}

And yes, two databases merlin_test and merlin_test2, two config files,
different directories for files (logs, merlind, ...) and two init scripts. 
merlin version from git today on both installations.

Any idea?

I have a couple questions:

 

First, I have a question pertaining to how Merlin interacts with
NDOUtils

 

A little background on my question:

 

I do not like the RRD based graphing solutions (which most seem to be)
as they are so sensitive to late or early checks. Instead, I use
NDOUtils to populate a MySQL database. I then use NDOGrapher to generate
performance data based graphs which can be anything from utilization to
LCV counters.

 

How does a multiple poller Merlin/Ninja installation work with NDO? When
the checks (and performance results) are returned to the NOC, are they
then passed though the event broker process so that the can be processed
via the NDO module? Or do I need to have each NDOUtils running on all of
the pollers? If the checks are not passed through the event broker
process on the NOC, do you have any suggestions on a work around that
does not involved running NDOUtils on all of the pollers? 

 

I did try this a long time ago, on like 0.5 code, and the Merlin module
seemed to preempt the NDO module but Merlin has matured tremendously
since then.

 

My second question is in reference to configuration involving multiple
NOCs and a series of pollers.

 

I plan to setup 2 NOCs that are peered together (though geographically
separate) and share all polling jobs with only 1 tier of pollers down
below them. I would like to link each poller to both NOCs for redundancy
instead of maintaining 2 separate constellations of pollers. 

 

How will Merlin handle the job distribution in this case? Will the
pollers accept jobs from both NOCs at the same time or link itself to
only 1? If it links itself to only one, can it fail over to the other
NOC seamlessly? If it links to both NOCs, how likely is the poller to be
over-saturated (while another is underutilized)?

 

My third question combines facets of the first two.

 

I also want to make my NDO database redundant. For this question I am
assuming the Merlin module on the NOC passes the check results back to
the event broker. In the case where I have 2 peered NOCs, are the check
results passed to the event broker on BOTH NOCs or only one of them? 

 

This matters as it affects how I create the redundancy for that
database.

 

My fourth question is most likely going to fall in the category of
feature request.

 

Is there a way to restrict polls from specific servicegroups to specific
pollers?

 

I would like to restrict services that check response times to specific
datacenters while all other polls destined to these hosts are
distributed per hostgroup rules. To acquire meaning full response times
that can be used to alert us to potential problems between an endpoint
device and a specific DC the polls need to originate from that DC. In
some cases, a single host may need response times tracked from multiple
datacenters. Also, most checks that need to occur on these hosts can
originate from anywhere. We have a highly redundant WAN. As such, I do
not want to lose all polling on a host just because 1 DC goes down (in
which case multiple pollers for redundancy at that DC won't matter).

 

Merlin would appear to be the ideal solution to this. If Merlin is not
capable of doing this I would like to add this to the feature request
list. I would think you could reuse much of the code used to parse the
hostgroups to accomplish this. I would try to make a patch myself but I
only know enough Perl, C, and shell scripting to get myself in trouble.
I am a network analyst that has only dabbled a little into programming.
Assuming I somehow was able to make a patch that did work, I doubt that
it would be of high enough quality to be accepted into your code base.

 

My last question should be the easiest.

 

Some comments I saw in the Ninja GIT tree made it appear that the
reports-module will be fully integrated with Merlin in version 0.8.1
(which I do not see in the web based GIT tree yet). In which case it
appears the reports module itself will not be needed as a separate
component. Is this the case or did I misunderstand the commit comment?

Hi all,

in the meantime i?m using nagtrap (http://www.nagtrap.org) in combination 
with snmptt and snmptrapd.
Snmptrapd catches all the traps and pass them to snmptt that again writes 
all received and known traps into a local mysql db. A associated service 
for each host checks if there are traps for him.

With this solution i only a notification when a trap is received but i 
don?t know what happened at first sight. I first have to look at nagtrap 
to find out what happened.
It?s by far not perfect, but at least it works :)

Hello!

We at Cypoint uses SNMPTT with the check_snmptraps.pl - nagios plugin
(Copyright (C) 2007 Michael Luebben),

Then i have written a GUI for this to ACK traps, its simple and ok, in a
700 host environment.

As before we submitted passive traps right into nagios, this was a total
flood, as our for example HP EVA SAN was flooding the duty on
maintenance.
Now instead we just get one alarm that we have relived CRITICAL traps.
we enter the webgui and check them and after that ACK them.


Keep it simple!

If you interested in this setup in any way, please contact me, I like
the sharing part in this community!

It seems commands also have a START and END type. I'll make sure to modify
it to only send the END commands, since that means the command has already
passed through one Nagios instance's verification process.

Thanks for testing and reporting this, and sorry for my sloppy research.

It was a fairly easy fix, so it's amended in git and pushed to git.op5.org
now. Feel free to grab the latest from there and try again.

It doesn't. You can use them both at the same time if you like, but
it might fsck NDOUtils up if Merlin blocks checks that NDOUtils have
already logged an "in-progress" thing to the database for. I don't
know how NDOUtils work internally though, so it might Just Work(tm).

Merlin is a replacement for NDOUtils with extended capabilities. We
have no interest in testing Merlin alongside NDOUtils and try to
find all the potential problems one might see.

"Try and find out" is the best answer I can give you. Like I said; We have
not and will not test how Merlin works alongside NDOUtils.

No. If that was the case, Merlin would play pingpong with one check result
indefinitely, or jump through hoops to find out which result originated
where. Not exactly an optimal solution.

Possibly. I don't know and, like I said, we have no interest in testing
Merlin alongside NDOUtils. They fill (almost) the same purpose, but
Merlin does it more efficiently in terms of CPU cycles, memory usage
and longtime storage space.

Modify Nagiosgrapher so that it works with the merlin database. I have
no idea how that would work though, as Merlin only stashes a subset of
the historical data. Perhaps you can invent some trickery with the
showlog program and parse the logfiles to get the data you want.

Or create OCSP/OCHP commands that stash the performance-data part in an
NDOUtils like database.

I should think so. v0.5 was 814 commits and more than a year ago. The
output of 'git diff --stat -- *.[ch] Makefile *.sql apps' is this:
 73 files changed, 15336 insertions(+), 1912 deletions(-)

The normal way. You assign one or more hostgroups to each poller and send
the configuration for every object related to that hostgroup to the poller,
which then runs the checks configured for it and sends it to any and all
masters or peers so long as it's up and running.

You've failed to understand how check distribution is handled in Merlin.
Each poller will always run all checks configured on it, unless that
poller has peers or pollers. If it does have peers or pollers, the normal
case for master nodes applies to the check distribution.

No. If you want a poller to have two masters, you need to configure both
those master servers for that poller.

That depends. Since you manually distribute checks to pollers you're
ultimately responsible for making sure each poller handles no more than
it can cope with.

It doesn't, so the point is moot.

The poller sends checkresults to all masters and peers, but NDOUtils
won't see them if they arrive via the Merlin protocol.

Slightly untrue but actually useful answer:
No. Checks are distributed to pollers via hostgroups. One or more
hostgroups are assigned to each poller. I advice against assigning
overlapping hostgroups unless the set of hostgroups are identical
for all pollers with overlapping hostgroups and those pollers are
configured as peers for each other. It's possible to do it, but the
howto for it falls under the "Dark Arts" category, since you need
to create a virtual 3tiered merlin network in a 2tiered topology.

Completely true but not so useful answer:
Yes. If your config-fu is up to scratch and you can accurately slice
up your object configuration so that each poller gets configured with
the checks it needs to run while no other poller has that check, and
you don't mind the special nodes being configured twice in the object
configuration, it is indeed possible to do this. Explaining how to do
it would take a few days though, so it'd probably be faster if you got
a support-contract and bought the feature outright. I have no idea
what it would cost, but I think 40-50 hours of development and testing
would do the trick.

If you're looking for the free (as in beer) version of how to do this,
I'd suggest setting up crontab entries on some remote systems and let
them push passive checkresults up to your Nagios instance. Passive
checkresults are also handled by Merlin (if they're not, that's a bug),
so that would get you what you need for the price of a couple of hours
work.

Parsing it out is not the hard part. The hard part is the config splitting
and modifying the poller code to let it figure out that it shouldn't
necessarily run the hostchecks for every host it has configured, just
because that host is in a service-group it's responsible for. Or perhaps
I didn't understand your question.

That's correct. The reports-module is no longer necessary and should be
removed from nagios/merlin/ninja installs where the merlin version is

On chkconf enabled systems, it should. Otherwise it's a job for package
maintainers to take care of, although I realize there aren't that many
packages for late enough releases of Merlin.

Sorry, I meant CMD_ACKNOWLEDGE_SVC_PROBLEM and CMD_ADD_SVC_COMMENT.

Great. I pulled the source from git (v0.8.0-beta3p41-g648299e14f0e), now it
works perfectly for me. 

I may found an issue on removing a comment from the remote site, but this 
occurs only if I uses livestatus (check_mk livestatus web interface which 
uses its own interface for commands - not the command pipe). If I use 
the classic Nagios web interface (using the command pipe) I can't 
reproduce this problem. So it should be a problem of livestatus.

I tried to setup postgres as a database backend for merlin. I thought,
it should work, because there's a DBI driver for postgres...
So, to setup postgres I:
  - created a user merlin
  - created a database "merlin". The User owns the database.
  - created a schema "merlin" within the database
  - hacked the script db.sql to create all the tables
This all seemed to work. I can connect to the database using psql as
usual.

I compiled/installed merlin. Everything seemed to be fine. But merlind
seems to be unable to insert records into the database. From the logs:

dbi_conn_query_null(): Failed to run [UPDATE merlin.program_status SET
is_running = 1, last_alive = 1285854760, program_start = 1285854754, pid

If I copy the SQL statement into psql and execute it the record is
inserted. 

I verified, that the merlind is connected to the database:

I doubt it. PostgreSQL doesn't support "database.table" syntax for inserts
and updates, which is why it was removed in commit b17de6e31e June 18
this year. Or perhaps I've missed something and the command-line version
of it does but the C api doesn't.

You're using an old version of Merlin. The sql dialect you're describing
was removed in June this year. Considering the pace of development I've
kept up on Merlin, that's practically ancient.

I suggest you download the latest merlin directly from git. If you're not
comfortable with the commandline version, you can get a snapshot from
http://git.op5.org/git/?p=nagios/merlin.git;a=summary

The project page will be updated with a new release this coming monday,
when Merlin will be considered feature-complete for its first production
release (0.9.0).

Hmm. If the livestatus system talks to a module (which I suppose it must)
and that module removes the comment by calling Nagios' internals directly
it's quite possible that it bypasses the eventbroker api.

If the "delete comment" event is created it should still be possible to
remove the comment on the remote end though. At least if one assumes they
have the same comment id.

Unfortunately I won't have time to test that properly in the near future.
We've already exceeded the beta-release date by a week, so taking more
time to make sure Merlin works with a module we don't even use at op5 is
not an option.

Patches are ofcourse always welcome ;)
