Your patch breaks the Makefile for GNU Make, and for everyone who doesn't
have a /usr/local/include directory.
If you want to write a Makefile for bsd make, please add a new file called
Makefile.bsd and submit a patch for
that. Since I don't have access to any *bsd systems, you'll have to keep it
up to date yourself.
You should be able to do
gmake CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/local/include
and then get it right though. If that doesn't work, I'll amend it so it
does.
